Assessment Includes

1.

Clinical Interview:

The process begins with a detailed conversation between the individual and a speech pathologist. This interview aims to gather comprehensive information about the individual’s swallowing difficulties.

The pathologist explores the onset and frequency of symptoms, any changes over time, and associated discomfort, such as pain or coughing. Additionally, the individual’s medical history, including past surgeries or conditions like stroke or Parkinson’s disease, is reviewed to understand potential underlying causes of dysphagia.

2.

Physical Examination:

Following the interview, a physical examination is conducted to assess various aspects of oral and pharyngeal anatomy and function.

This includes an inspection of the oral cavity, teeth, and dentures (if applicable) to identify any structural abnormalities or issues that may impact swallowing.

The speech pathologist evaluates muscle strength, range of motion, and coordination by observing movements of the lips, tongue, and throat.

Special attention is paid to any asymmetry, weakness, or signs of impaired muscle function that could contribute to swallowing difficulties.

3.

Functional Evaluation:

The assessment culminates in a functional evaluation of swallowing during a meal or with various food and liquid consistencies. The individual is observed while eating and drinking to assess their ability to manage different textures and volumes safely.

The speech pathologist monitors for signs of aspiration, such as coughing, choking, or changes in voice quality, which indicate that food or liquid may be entering the airway. The individual’s ability to chew, initiate a swallow, and clear residue from the mouth is also evaluated.

This real-time observation provides valuable insight into the specific challenges faced during mealtime and guides the development of targeted interventions and strategies to improve swallowing safety and efficiency.
