A Bio-Psych-Social Approach to Treatment

What is the Bio-Psycho-Social approach ?

The truth is that the manifestations of any underlying injury, disease or physiological complications are often multi-factorial. The physical, mental and social ramifications of any physical issue all contribute to the impact that it has on the individual. For this reason, when it comes to the treatment of such complications, it would be remiss of any practitioner to only address one of these contributing factors. Because of this, in any treatment it is of vital importance to ensure that all three aspects are dealt with to ensure the greatest rehabilitation outcome is achieved.

Bio-Psycho-Social approach defined

The Bio-Psycho-Social model is defined as a general model or approach positing that biological, psychological (which entails thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), and social (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural) factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness.

Based on this definition, if a practitioner only addresses one or two of the bio-psycho-social model factors, he/she is not addressing the disease/illness in its entirety.

This is very much at the forefront of our thinking here at Optimum, as we make every effort to satisfy the multifactorial nature of an individual’s health and fitness needs.

How does Optimum apply this to our clients?

As many of our long term clients know, our sessions are packed with evidence-based research, in all areas. Our trainers deliver the best possible session and service to each of our clients from the wealth of experience they have gained through university and on the job learning. However a research based program in isolation still fails to address all three aspects of the BPS model to treatment.

To offset this, we have regimented review dates to monitor, assess and evaluate every aspect of your training. This is where we can sit down, unpack and breakdown every aspect of your health and fitness (Biological, social and psychological). This serves to achieve two things; firstly your practitioner/trainer has greater scope steer you towards improved health and fitness outcomes, and secondly you can be confident that your trainer can implement strategies to overcome every biological, psychological and social barriers that you may carry. It’s all about getting results and helping you make the changes needed.
